Mysuru: We live freely in India, because of our Constitution, drafted by B R Ambedkar, said MLA K Harish Gowda.
He was speaking after inaugurating the 134th birth anniversary (Jayanthi) of B R Ambedkar, organised by the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, Mysuru City Corporation, and the Department of Social Welfare at Karnataka Kalamandira in Mysuru on Monday.
The one who gave us such a strong Constitution is Ambedkar. He was not just a constitutional expert, but also a renowned Economist and had expertise in many subjects. It is a matter of pride for all of us that such a great person drafted our Constitution, Harish Gowda said.
He said, “We must understand the Constitution and celebrate it as ‘Bhima Parva’ (a grand festival in honour of Bhima, symbolising strength and justice).” He expressed his disappointment that the Constitution, which gave equality and opportunity to live harmoniously to the poor, backward classes, and untouchables, is not being properly utilised by the citizens."
Ambedkar wanted to provide equality, eradicate untouchability, and eliminate oppression, he said.
MLA G T Devegowda, speaking on the occasion, said that Ambedkar opened everyone's eyes through the Constitution. “Ambedkar gave every individual the right to vote. He gave us the right to elect the best representatives,” he said.
Ambedkar is not just an individual; he is a great institution. He gave the call for education, organisation, and struggle against injustice. Ambedkar gave priority to education and brought about a revolution, he said.
Ambedkar achieved more than what was done by Buddha, Basavanna and Gandhi. He gave us equality, social justice, and economic justice, he said.
