Anjali Patil (32), a resident of Nilji village in Belagavi taluk, was admitted to the hospital for delivery on January 27 (Monday). It was her first delivery in 12 years of marriage. Since she did not develop labour pain, the child was delivered through a Caesarian section.

Anjali’s family members alleged that after C-Section, her health worsened and their request to refer her to other hospitals was not considered.

They said their consent was not obtained for the Caesarian surgery and they were made to sign on plain white paper. Family members and relatives staged a protest near the mortuary.

BIMS District Hospital Director Dr Ashok Kumar Shetty told reporters that Anjali was 40-week pregnant and admitted for delivery at 4 pm on Monday.

As it was high-risk pregnancy, Caesarian section was conducted. In the operation theatre, she suffered epileptic attack and blood pressure too came down.

“There was no medical negligence and all efforts were made to revive the patient by experienced doctors. Post mortem will ascertain the cause of the death,” he said.

BIMS District Hospital registers an average of 10,000 deliveries annually. Almost 50 per cent of them are high-risk and are conducted through Caesarian section. Most of the complicated cases are referred from primary health centres and other hospitals. The hospital has recorded 3 maternal deaths in three months, he said.
