Gajendragad (Gadag district): A 53-year-old woman was mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs at Cholin Oni here on Sunday. The victim has been identified as Prema Sharanappa Cholin.
The street dogs pounced on her when she was plucking flowers from trees grown in the compound of her house in the early hours. She suffered multiple bites and was rushed to a community healthcare centre in the town, where she failed to respond to treatment and died.
The family members of the deceased woman, joined by the locals, staged a protest in front of the hospital expressing their anguish against the town municipal council’s (TMC) apathy in addressing the street dog menace. The agitators blocked the highway for a while.
In 2023, the street dogs had attacked a boy at Shivajipet in the town. The passersby had then rescued the boy by chasing the dogs away.
The TMC should wake up from its slumber and take necessary measures to curb the menace, the agitators said and demanded adequate compensation to the kin of the victim.
Subhash Myageri, the TMC president, assured the protesters that steps would be taken to curb the stray dog menace in the town. He said that the local body will give the victim’s family a compensation of Rs 3 lakh and that the local legislator has assured of providing a relief of Rs 2 lakh from the CM’s relief fund.
The Gajendragad police have registered an unnatural death case.
