On the occasion of international women’s day, various organisations had organised programmes in Hassan, Mandya and Chamarajanagar districts on Thursday.
The events were jointly organised by district administration, Zilla Panchayat and Women and Child Welfare department. A rally was taken out from deputy commissioner’s office to Kalabhavan on Thursday. Flagging off the rally, Senior civil judge Saraswati V Kosandar said: “International women’s day is being celebrated with the objective of securing equal rights and space for women in the society, on par with men. Every woman must know about the rights she is entitled for, and the responsibilities she carries. She should adapt herself to changing situations, and work towards steering the family and society towards progress.”
Deputy commissioner Mohan Raj, ZP CEO Anjan Kumar, Women and Child Welfare department deputy director H C Chidanand, assistant director V Geetha and others were present. Women participated in a rally that started from DC’s office and culminated at Hasanama Kalakshetra. Writer Roopa Hassana addressed the audience at the event held at Kalakshetra. Women who had achieved various feats were felicitated on the occasion.
Chamarajanagar
ZP standing committee member B P Puttabuddhi opined that education plays a major role in the empowerment of women, especially in the rural areas.
Speaking at the International women’s day celebrations held at J H Patel auditorium in city, organised by district administration, zilla panchayat, department of women and child development, he said only by providing proper education, women in rural areas can be brought into the mainstream of the society.
Women are capable of competing with their male counterparts in all the fields and it is the rural women who are becoming victims to superstitions.
Women should take initiative in construction of toilets in villages and maintain the health and hygiene of the family and surroundings, he stressed.
ZP member Rajeshwari said that women’s rights are still existent only in books and it is women themselves who should fight for their right and freedom.
Every women should become self-dependent which improves their self confidence, she said.
Deputy director of women and child welfare department Sheher Banu, H K Revanesh, TP president Mahadevi and others were present.
Mandya
‘Women’s Financial Empowerment Movement’ would be launched in the district shortly for the overall development of women and the society, said zilla panchayat chief executive officer G G Jayaram.
He said the movement is being launched under Nabard funds and two villages have been selected for the pilot project. Women would be made economically self-sufficient by providing financial aid available from various government departments and agencies.
Deputy commissioner Dr P C Jaffer called upon women to take a leap into even politics.
Monica (sports), Savitha (folk art), Chikkathayamma (self-employment), Sister Leela (social service) and Amala Devi (agriculture) were felicitated for their achievements on the occasion.
MLA M Srinivas presided over the function. ZP president Shivanna, vice-president Komala and others were present.
