Bidar: ICMR-National Institute of Virology Director Dr Naveen Kumar said that there is a high possibility of more pandemics like Covid in the future and young researchers should be prepared to face them.
Addressing the 14th convocation of the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries University held here on Tuesday, he said that forest destruction, global warming, and significant melting of glaciers are taking place.
Stating that it has been decided to start four new laboratories in the country under the National One Health Mission in which the role of veterinary officers will also be important, he said that these laboratories will play an important role in preventing pandemics. “To eradicate any disease, it is very important to prepare a vaccine. It should also be commercialised. Many vaccines are being imported to our country. We should prepare our own vaccines without depending on others. We have to become modern architects of developed India”, he advised.
“We should strive to question, conduct scientific research, discover new things, and acquire knowledge beyond our borders. We should explore new possibilities through interdisciplinary studies, the application of technology, and new discoveries. We also have the responsibility to enrich society and the environment around us through our research”, he said.
Speaking after presenting gold medals and degree certificates to the students, Animal Husbandry Minister K Venkatesh said that the animal husbandry sector of the state is very vast and the fisheries provides employment to 16 lakh people. There are about 2.9 crore cattle in the state. Genetic diseases are causing huge losses to Karnataka every year. Young researchers should be prepared to face this problem. Disease control should be given priority. They should contribute to the state through research without confining themselves to degrees, he suggested.
“The state government has implemented schemes like Pashu Bhagya, Ksheera Bhagya and Meenu Siri. Young professionals are needed to ensure the success of these schemes. Agriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries sectors are playing an important role in the development of the state. Skilled professionals are required for these sectors to develop further and the university is fulfilling these needs. The knowledge learnt here should be dedicated for the benefit of the farming community”, he said. University Vice-Chancellor K C Veeranna said that it has been decided to start a new college in Puttur from the current year. Registrar P T Ramesh, scientist Dr Shivaprakash, syndicate members Basavaraj Bhatamurge, Dilip Kumar, Ramappa, Prakash Rathod were present.
