The opening day of the proceedings was marked by the absence of lead counsels from both the sides. While special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, appointed by the state to argue the case in the HC, was absent, state-appointed defence lawyer Mobin Solkar too did not turn up.

Justice Ranjana Desai and Justice Vijaya Tahilramani postponed the matter after public prosecutor Pandurang Pol informed the bench that the state would file an appeal against acquittal of Faheem Ansari and Sabauddin Shaikh in the same case within a week.

Earlier, Kasab wrote a letter to the High Court saying that he wants to appeal against the verdict and sought a legal aid panel to fight his case. He sent the letter through the jail authorities and his plea for a lawyer was forwarded to the High Court Legal Services Committee.

Two lawyers, Amin Solkar and Farhana Shah, have been appointed by the Maharashtra State Legal Services Authority to defend Kasab at the state’s expense.
