After spending a week in Tihar jail here, former Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party founder Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday furnished bail bond following the Delhi High Court’s direction and was released from the jail.

Kejriwal had refused to furnish bail bond twice in a defamation case filed by Union minister Nitin Gadkari.

On Monday, Kejriwal had filed a habeas corpus petition for his release, saying he has been “illegally” sent to judicial custody on “completely wrong premise of law” by the court’s orders of May 21 and May 23. He challenged a trial court order sending him to judicial custody till June 6 after he refused to furnish a personal bond.

However, the HC bench remarked: “Everything can't be an exception for this man."

On Tuesday, when senior advocate Shanti Bhushan and his advocate son Prashant Bhushan sought release of Kejriwal, the Delhi High Court directed them to convince Kejriwal to furnish the bail bonds.

The bench of Justice Kailash Gambhir and Justice Sunita Gupta said it will look into the legal challenge.
