Thiruvananthapuram: A 12 year old girl was apprehended by the police in Kannur district of Kerala in connection with the death of her four month old cousin who was found dead in a well.
Baby girl child of Tamil Nadu native and Pappinissery residents Muthu and Akkamma was found dead in the well on the premises of their quarters. Muthu's brother's daughter was apprehended by the police in this connection.
According to the police, the 12 year old girl, who was under the care of Muthu and his wife after she lost her parents, was apprehensive that she was losing the love and care of Muthu and his wife after the baby was born to them. This jealous factor seems to be the provocation.
Late on Monday night the 12 year old girl informed Muthu and his wife that the child, who was sleeping with them, could not be seen. The family informed the police as the child was not seen around. In subsequent searches the child was found dead in the well.
Police said that contradictions in the girl's statement and suspicions of Muthu and his wife were crucial in the investigation. The house was locked from inside and it was not possible for the baby to fall in the well without the involvement of any others, said the police.
The girl will be produced before the juvenile justice board and further probe will be conducted.
