Thiruvananthapuram: The paroles granted to a convict in the murder of a dissident CPM leader and another convict in a dowry death case have triggered a row in Kerala with the opposition Congress accusing the CPM government of favouring 'criminals'.
T P Chandrasekharan murder case convict Sunil Kumar alias 'Kodi Suni' and Vismaya dowry death case convict Kiran Kumar were granted parole.
Sunil Kumar was granted parole as per a recommendation of the Human Rights Commission to the prison authorities to consider a plea of his mother for parole citing her illness. But it triggered a row as 30 days parole was granted despite an adverse police report against Kodi Suni. He was indulging in criminal activities even after being held in the brutal killing of T P Chandrasekharan that rocked the state in 2012.
Leader of opposition V D Satheesan strongly flayed the decision. "The CPM government is openly challenging the criminal judicial system by granting 30 days leave for a notorious criminal," Satheesan said.
Chandrasekharan's wife K K Rema, who is an opposition MLA, also questioned the month long parole for visiting mother. "The human rights of Chandrasekharan and his family should have been also considered while taking such a decision," she said.
Meanwhile, Vismaya dowry death accused Kiran Kumar, who is undergoing ten years sentence for dowry harassment and abetting suicide of his wife, was granted 30 days parole by the prison department. VIsmaya's family alleged that the parole was granted overlooking adverse police reports.
