Ashirnanda, a ninth standard student of St Dominic's Convent English Medium School at Sreekrishnapuram in Palakkad, was found hanging at her house on Monday evening.

Her parents Prasanth and Sajitha alleged that torture by the school authorities over studies was the reason for Nanda ending life.

Students, parents and activists of student organisations staged a strong protest at the school premises on Wednesday. They later dispersed after the police assured stringent action against those responsible for the death. A meeting of the parent-teacher association will be held on Thursday. A police case was registered in connection with the death of Ashirnanda.

Some parents said that the school used to classify students on the basis of the marks they obtain in routine class tests. This was said to be causing mental torture to students who could not perform well in exams.
