The Gandhi Nagar police in Kottayam arrested five third-year students of the government nursing college in Kottayam. They were suspended from the college.

Six first-year students of the college were allegedly facing the brutal ragging at the college hostel since last November. The seniors allegedly inflicted injuries by using a compass and other sharp objects to pierce parts of their bodies, including nails.

Some were allegedly made to hang dumbbells from the private parts and were forced to drink liquor. The accused also allegedly extorted cash from the juniors for drinking liquor. The students were threatened against disclosing the brutality to the college authorities.

But, the students reported the matter to the college authorities as the brutality continued. Subsequently, the college authorities reported the matter to the police.

The students arrested were identified as Samuel Johnson, N S Jeev, K P Rahul Raj, C Rijil Jith and Vivek N P.

The incident came close on the heels of the death of 15-year-old boy Mihir Ahammed by suicide, allegedly following bullying by classmates in Kochi.

Last year a 20 year old student of the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in Wayanad died after brutal ragging by senior students.

He was found dead in the hostel on February 18 last year.
