Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala General Education Minister V Sivankutty has invited suggestions on changing the April-May summer vacations in state schools to monsoon vacation, which fall in June-July.
Frequent disruptions of classes due to the bad weather in monsoon led to the suggestion, which was widely shared on social media.
The minister cited that issues like exposing students to the acute summer could be a cause for concern while allowing schools to function during summer vacation. However, he also looked into the inconveniences caused to schools during the rainy season.
He noted that there are difficulties in transportation and the risk of the spread of diseases.
Frequent disruption of classes owing to rough weather alerts and functioning of schools as relief camps, were further cited by the minister.
He said that final decision will be taken only after detailed discussion on the pros and cons.
The minister's suggestion already triggered objections from netizens citing the risks in exposing children to acute summer and dissimilarity with the academic calendar being followed at the national level.
