Additional DGP M R Ajithkumar, who is facing probes in connection with lapses in security arrangements during the Thrissur Pooram festival and amassment of illegal wealth, is being promoted to DGP rank subject to vacancy.

The cabinet meeting on Wednesday gave nod for the screening committee recommendations to promote 12 IPS officers of various ranks, including Ajithkumar, who is a 1995 batch IPS officer.

Law minister P Rajeev said that the decision was made as per noms.

Congress alleged that Ajithkumar was being protected by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan

Ajithkumar was earlier caught up in a row over meeting RSS top leaders. He faced allegations of creating trouble at the Thrissur pooram festival by imposing excessive police restrictions on organisers.

A preliminary probe found the allegations true and hence a detailed probe is on. He was also shifted from ADGP (law and order) post and is now holding the post of ADGP (armed police battalion). He is also facing allegations of amassing illegal wealth.
