Shyni K C of Pazhayannur in Thrissur approached the commission after a textile shop in Thrissur refused to return the excess payment despite her repeated request.

The bill amount of Rs 2,123 was paid twice via an UPI payment app under the impression that the initial payment was unsuccessful. The incident took place in August 2022.

The commission headed by C T Sabu recently ordered refund of the amount of Rs 2,123 with nine per cent interest, i.e. Rs 10,000 and Rs 2,500 to be paid within one month.

The order was issued ex-parte as the shop authorities did not respond.

Advocate A D Benny who appeared for the consumer said that there is a general tendency among shops to ignore the refund requests of consumers.

Also many consumers used to ignore such issues. Hence such orders should serve as a message, especially since instances of excess payments through UPI are quite high these days.
