Gafoor, aged around 45, was mauled to death by the tiger. Another tapping worker had a narrow escape in the incident that took place during the wee hours of Thursday.

The incident triggered strong protests with locals alleging that the forest department did not act despite being alerted repeatedly of the presence of tigers in the region. The protest was later settled with government officials assuring swift measures to trap the tiger. The family was also assured due compensations, including job to a dependent.

A forest task force also launched a search for the tiger.

In January a 45-year-old woman was killed in a tiger attack in Wayanad. The tiger was found dead three days later. It had also attacked a forest official during the search operation.
