The incident occurred in the Bhadbhada forest of the Samardha range area near Dewanganj, 30 km from the district headquarters, he said.

Samardha range forest officer Shivpal Piparde said he received information about the leopard carcass lying near the railway track in the morning, and a forest team rushed to the site.

The leopard was about two years old, he said.

The official said that there is also a possibility that the leopard had been roaming in the area for the last few months, preying on cattle.

Earlier, a leopard attacked and seriously injured a farmer, who was saved by his pet dog, and this big cat could be the same one, he said.

"We are investigating all the aspects and checking the CCTV footage installed in the forest area," the official said, adding that the carcass will be sent to Bhopal for autopsy.
