In a major embarrassment to the Tamil Nadu government, the Madras High Court on Tuesday transferred to CBI all cases related to police firing in Thoothukudi during the anti-Sterlite agitation in May this year.

Justices C T Selvam and Basheer Ahamed of the Madurai Bench also quashed detention of six members of Makkal Adhikaram under the National Security Act (NSA).

The division bench came down heavily on the police and transferred all cases related to the May 22 and 23 police firing to the CBI. Thirteen people were killed and several injured when police opened fire on the protesters during the anti-Sterlite protests.
