Mumbai: In what was a close shave, an Air India aircraft overshot the runway of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai amid inclement weather conditions on Monday morning.

The Mumbai Airport and Air India confirmed the incident. The flight has arrived in Mumbai from Kochi.

All the passengers and crew members were safe. The aircraft has been grounded for mandatory checks.

There was slight damage to the engine of the aircraft and besides bursting of tyres, the runway too suffered damage.

An Air India spokesperson said that the Flight AI2744 experienced heavy rain during landing, resulting in a runway excursion after touchdown.

"The aircraft taxied safely to the gate, and all passengers and crew members have since disembarked. The aircraft has been grounded for checks. The safety of passengers and crew remains our top priority,” the spokesperson said.

A CSMIA spokesperson said that emergency response teams were immediately activated to manage the runway excursion. “All passengers and crew are safe. There are minor damages reported to the airport's primary runway - 09/27. In order to ensure continuity of operations, the Secondary Runway 14/32 - has been activated. At CSMIA, safety always remains our highest priority,” the spokesperson added.
