Mumbai: Downplaying the issue of Sharad Pawar-headed NCP (SP) not signing the joint letter of the Congress-led INDIA opposition bloc demanding special session to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, Baramati MP and party’s Working President Supriya Sule said that she could not do so as she was away on four-nation outreach tour.
However, she said that the party’s stance is not a point of debate when Operation Sindoor is underway.
“Saheb always said that on matters of foreign affairs and national security, one has to back the government of the day,” she said referring to the statement of Pawar, the former Defence Minister in the PV Narasimha Rao government and an ex Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
According to her, she had asked the Congress leadership to wait till all the multi-party delegations touring various countries return to India.
Sule, a four-time Lok Sabha member and one-term Rajya Sabha member, led a delegation to Qatar, South Africa, Ethiopia, and Egypt.
“I couldn’t sign the letter demanding the special session of Parliament as I was on a tour representing the country. I have shown faith and trust in my country. The tour was productive,” said Sule, pointing out: “I couldn’t be demanding a special session of Parliament and a debate while putting forth my country’s point of view abroad at the same time.”
However, she added that during the monsoon session of the Parliament, related questions would be asked.
“There was a very clear message of peace and there is zero tolerance against terrorism anywhere in the world. One message was clearly given by all that terrorism has no religion,” she said.
“The countries that we visited share close relations with India, which they consider the land of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi,” she said.
