The demand has been pending for the past three to four decades.

The BJP-led Maha Yuti government announced the decision to rename Islampur as Ishwarpur on the last day of the monsoon session Maharashtra legislature on Friday.

The announcement was made by Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Minister Chhagan Bhujbal.

He said the State government will send the cabinet decision to the Centre for approval.

The move came after a Right-wing organisation, Shiv Pratisthan headed by Sambhaji Bhide, sent a memorandum to the Sangli collector's office demanding that Islampur’s name be changed to Ishwarpur.
