Mumbai: A massive ammonia leak at the Mahanand Dairy in the Goregaon off the Western Express Highway  triggered a major scare in the financial capital of Mumbai on Wednesday.

The leak was detected at 0922 hrs, officials of the Disaster Management Unit of the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.

“The ammonia gas leakage in an area about 500 sq ft in ground floored cold storage structure,” BMC sources said. 

As a precaution, the plant's electrical supply was disconnected. 

The entire staff of the unit was evicted as a precautionary measure. 

As soon as the leak was detected, there was immediate response from various agencies, including the Mumbai fire brigade, Mumbai Police, and HAZMAT unit.

The leak happened inside a ground-floor refrigeration unit.
