Mumbai: The ongoing cold war between Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde seems to be increasing by the day - this time over the downgrading of security cover of 20-odd Shiv Sena MLAs.
Security cover of some MLAs of NCP led by Deputy CM Ajit Pawar was also reduced, however, in terms of numbers, it was much less.
As per the protocols of Special Protection Unit (SPU), which falls under the State Intelligence Department, the CM and two Deputy CMs have been given Z-Plus category security, the ministers have been given Y-plus category security.
As far as NCP (SP) supremo Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena (UBT) head Uddhav Thackeray, they would continue to be covered under Z-plus category security.
In June-July 2022, some of the Shiv Sena MLAs, who sided with Shinde, were provided enhanced security in view of threat to them. As ministers in the MahaYuti-NDA government many of them continue to enjoy the Y+ category scrutiny.
After the review, the security of 20-odd MLAs were reduced and have been given just one constable.
Shinde, however, denied there was any cold war between the two allies. “There is no cold war (between allies)…“There is no cold war as this is not Maha Vikas Aghadi or INDI alliance. Our war is with the people who are opposing the development of Maharashtra…we are ‘thanda thanda cool cool,” said Shinde, who is the state Urban Development Minister.
The issue involving security was the second incident between the two allies this week as Shinde as Deputy CM has set up a Medical Aid Cell at the secretariat despite the existing Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
However, Fadnavis said that there is nothing wrong in that. “Many people approach the office of the CM and Deputy CM for help,” he said.
Last week, Shinde set up a coordination centre in Mantralaya to oversee the implementing infrastructure projects despite a war room for such a purpose which is headed by Fadnavis.
