Mumbai: Mobile forensic labs will be game-changers in reaching crime scenes faster, gathering on-site evidence, and speeding up investigations, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said.
“Forensic labs are not just about science; they’re pillars of justice. The new criminal laws — Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam — place forensic evidence at the centre,” said Fadnavis, who is the state Home and Law & Judiciary Minister.
“Today, Maharashtra’s conviction rate stands at 54 per cent. As we move towards becoming a developed economy, our goal is to reach 90 per cent and that’s why we’ve created India’s most advanced Cyber Forensic setup right here in Maharashtra — so effective that other States are now looking to replicate it,” Fadnavis said after performing the bhoomi-poojan of the new Regional Forensic Science Laboratory building in Nagpur.
According to Fadnavis, the Forensic department’s efficiency rose by 22 per cent in 2024 compared to 2023.
“Regional Forensic Science Laboratories will soon adopt a more citizen-centric approach, along with the use of blockchain technology — a move that will bring greater speed and transparency to the process of establishing evidence and delivering justice on time,” the CM said.
