These red buses were part of the spirit of Mumbai and have been used in several Hindi movies.

They were part of the transformation from Bombay to Mumbai.

The rush for grabbing the upper-deck front seat, which gives a unique view of the roads of Mumbai, would be missed.

The BrihanMumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST), an undertaking of the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), ran these buses.

Capturing a video of the last run between Agarkar Chowk and Seepz bus stands, Mumbai Heritage on X posted: “Goodbye Double-Decker Bus.  The Last Double Decker bus (non-AC) leaving from Marol Depot today morning.”

These buses have graced the roads for over 80 years.

Once numbering 900, the fleet of the double-decker BEST buses had dwindled around a dozen.

Mumbai now has a small fleet of AC electric double-decker buses but the numbers are expected to grow in the days to come. These new buses have facilities like digital ticketing, CCTV cameras, live tracking, digital display, and a panic button for emergencies, among others.

Mumbai Congress President Prof Varsha Gaikwad said: “Farewell to a childhood memory that has stayed with us so long - the BEST double decker bus. As it takes its final ride today, we thank these iconic red buses for the countless memories, the fun and the efficient rides they provided. While we welcome the new EV buses, nothing can replace the feeling of the wind on your face as you sat in the front row of the top tier of the bus.”

Sharing her emotion, Advocate Hetal Panjari posted on social media: "My last ride today on Mumbai's iconic and favourite vehicle - the red double decker BEST bus. I had fond memories of travelling in this bus during my childhood days, especially on the top deck window seat. Bye Bye Double decker BEST bus.”

Commuters and heritage enthusiasts have urged the BEST to preserve at least two of these iconic vehicles at its Anik Depot museum.
