New Delhi: Modernisation work of Nagpur Railway Station, a key hub under Central Railway's Nagpur Division, is likely to be completed by the end of 2026, said the Indian Railways.
Upon completion, the station will became a benchmark for the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, ensuring seamless connectivity, world-class facilities, and an inclusive environment, the railways said.
The Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) is executing the modernisation work with the expenditure of Rs 488 crore. The work started in 2022 and it is expected to complete by the end of next year, said Pawan Patil, Chief Project Manager of RLDA.
The major highlight of the station modernisation is restoration of the heritage building of the station which was built in 1925. With the building completing its 100 years of construction, the RLDA is taking its restoration work soon, he said.
The British era building which has its link to India's freedom struggle, the railways is working on its meticulous restoration. The historical structure will retain its legacy while complementing the modern upgrades, said the railway officials.
The modernised station will also have Nagpur's cultural heritage through artistic murals, upgraded digital signage, and aesthetically designed wall cladding, said the officials.
The Nagpur Station, which handles 283 trains daily, with an average footfall of over 68,000 passengers. Total 96 trains originating or terminating at the station while 18 trains starting their journey here. The railways aims to handle more than one lakh passengers per day as part of its modernisation plan.
Ajni railway station development
The railways is also taking up the modernisation of Ajni railway station, located 3 km away from Nagpur, with the investment of Rs 359. 82 crore. The railways are planning to develop Ajni station as part of its plan to decongest Nagpur station.
At present passengers footfall at the station is 5,000 and the station is being developed to handle 40,000 passengers daily. Once the modernisation works, the railways will shift some of the trains from Nagpur station to Ajni station, said the railway officials.
The redeveloped station will have several facilities including 21 lifts, 17 escalators, and six travelators. Other features include spacious waiting halls, CCTV surveillance, wayfinding signage, access control systems, and infrastructure friendly for Divyangjan, said the officials.
