Mumbai: In a shocking incident, eminent neurosurgeon Dr Shirish Valsangkar died by suicide by shooting himself at his residence in the Solapur town of Maharashtra on Friday evening.

Dr Valsangkar is survived by wife, son and daughter.

The incident took place around 8:30 pm, reports reaching here said.

Dr Valsangkar used his licensed revolver and shot himself.

The reason for the step taken by the doctor is not yet known.

The body has been sent for post-mortem.

Dr Valsangkar was not only popular in Solapur but also across Maharashtra and elsewhere in India.

Dr Valsangkar attended D B F Dayanand College of Arts and Science in Solapur and graduated with honours. They earned their MBBS, MD, and MRCP from Shivaji University and the Royal College of Physicians in London, respectively. He was proficient in four languages - Marathi, Kannada, English, and Hindi.
