Mumbai: At least eight persons were killed and several injured as a pick-up pickup van carrying women and children to Kundeshwar temple plunged 25-30 feet in a gorge while negotiating a ghat section near a village in the Khed tehsil of Pune on Monday.
More than 30 people were injured in the accident.
Majority of the victims are said to be women and children.
The injured women have been admitted to a private hospital in Khed for treatment.
Police investigation underway
The Pimpri-Chinchwad police is investigating the case. Deputy Commissioner of Police Shivaji Pawar said that the vehicle fell 25-30 feet down a slope and overturned.
The incident took place while the group was travelling from the Papalwadi village, located near the temple, on the third Shravan Somvar -- an auspicious day when a huge rush of devotees visit the ancient and revered Shree Kshetra Mahadev Kundeshwar Temple.
State announces compensation of Rs 4 lakh
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief over the tragedy and announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the kin of the deceased persons.
"A tragic incident has taken place in which seven people died after a pick-up van met with an accident. I offer my condolences to the families of the deceased. Rs 4 lakh aid will be given to the next of kin of the deceased," he stated.
PM Modi shared condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the mishap while praying for the speedy recovery of injured persons.
“Saddened by the loss of lives due to an accident in Pune, Maharashtra. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the mishap. May the injured recover soon,” he posted on X.
