Mumbai: Couple of days after a Pune-based techie was sexually assaulted  by a man masquerading as a courier delivery agent, the Forum for IT Employees (FITE), a pressure group of the IT/ITES sector, has come out with an advisory of sorts which include strengthening personal security systems.

The incident that took place on Wednesday evening in the Kondhwa area of Pune has left the people shocked.

“We are deeply saddened and outraged by the recent incident in Pune in which a young IT professional was sexually assaulted in her own home by a delivery person. Such crimes are unacceptable, and the responsibility lies solely with the perpetrator,” FITE said in a post on X.

The employees body suggested to use a safety door with a small grill or window. “Speak to delivery personnel through the safety door and avoid fully opening it unless absolutely necessary. Install a doorbell camera or CCTV covering your main entrance. Many modern systems let you speak to visitors via mobile apps before opening the door,” it said.

“Consider collecting deliveries at building security gates or lobbies if you live alone or feel unsafe opening the door at odd hours. Request delivery OTPs and avoid letting strangers inside. Many apps offer contactless delivery or leave-at-door options,” it added.

FITE said that it would be better to inform building security or neighbours when expecting deliveries especially during late hours.

“Keep emergency numbers handy. Save helpline numbers and trusted contacts on the speed dial. Trust your instincts. If someone seems suspicious, refuse entry and seek help. These are suggestions, not obligations. Women have every right to feel safe in their own homes,” it said.

FITE also urged authorities, delivery platforms, and residential societies to strengthen verification processes, train delivery personnel in proper conduct, and ensure prompt action on complaints.

“Above all, let us remember that the fault lies not with the victim, but with those who commit these heinous acts. Our solidarity and support are with the survivor and all women who deserve to live without fear,” FITE said.
