Mumbai: Extremely rare and antique books on natural history, wildlife and environment will be on display at the iconic Chhtrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya in Mumbai - giving book lovers, naturalists and conservationists a rare chance to see and appreciate these books.
The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) has provided unique opportunity to nature lovers and book readers of Mumbai to immerse in the fascinating world of rare books and the wonders of nature.
The 10th Rare Books Exhibition: Hidden Hands in Colonial Natural Histories would be held from 17-22 December.
The BNHS is holding the exhibition in collaboration with McGill Library and Collections, McGill University, Canada.
This unique exhibition offers visitors an unparalleled opportunity to explore a curated selection of rare manuscripts, illustrated books, scientific journals, and field guides that span centuries of scientific discovery.
"We are thrilled to present this rare and exciting exhibition. This exhibition not only celebrates the history of scientific knowledge but also emphasizes the importance of preserving our natural world and the knowledge we have accumulated over centuries,” said Kishor Rithe, Director, BNHS.
These volumes, some of which date back to the 17th and 18th centuries, reflect the rich legacy of exploration, study, and conservation of the natural world.
Dr. Ashok Kothari, Chairman, Library Committee, BNHS provided more information on the rare book exhibition.
According to him, the exhibits will be displayed in three sections.
First editions of Pioneering Works which included Rare first editions by prominent naturalists such as Russel, Patrick (1801), John Gould (1850-1873), Wallich, Nathaniel (1832) will be the part of the first section.
Second section will have Hand-illustrated Field Guides. The Highlights of this section are John Gould’s The Birds of Asia,Oriental Memoirs by James Forbes (1813) and the Memories of a Map of Hindoostan.
The third category will be Exquisite illustrations depicting flora, fauna, and geological formations, highlighting the art and science of natural history.
“It is an excellent opportunity for scholars, nature enthusiasts, and the general public to connect with the timeless wisdom that these books represent,” said Rithe.
Nirmala Barure, Librarian, BNHS appealed to nature lovers to visit the unique exhibition.
