Mumbai: Taking serious view about derogatory and objectionable references about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in Wikipedia, Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has asked Maharashtra police to get it removed after getting in touch with the open-source free-content online encyclopedia.
Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj (14 May 1657 – 11 March 1689), also known as Shambhu Raje, was the son of legendary Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
The references about Sambhaji Maharaj on Wikipedia became a point of discussion after the release of Chhava, a Hindi film on the warrior-king, which was released last Friday to spectacular reviews.
"I have asked the Inspector General of Police (Maharashtra Cyber) to communicate with Wikipedia officials and ask them to remove the objectionable content regarding Sambhaji Maharaj. We will not tolerate such distortions of historical facts on open-source platforms," said Fadnavis, who is also the state Home and Law & Judiciary Minister.
“Wikipedia does not operate from India, and it is run by volunteers who edit the content. We can, however, request them to implement regulations that will prevent such distortions of historical facts,” he said.
