The deceased were identified as Aryan Khobragade (20), Firoz Shaikh (19) and Sumit Chavan (16).

They were part of a group from Kopar Khairane, one of the nodes in the satellite township of Navi Mumbai spread across the Thane-Raigad belt.

Charlotte Lake supplies potable water to Matheran and swimming is prohibited.

During monsoon weekends, hundreds throng the Matheran to enjoy the beauty of the hill station.

The Matheran police and fire brigade recovered the bodies after a five-hour-long search and rescue operation.

Of the 10 member group, five of them went for swimming and probably could not fathom the depth.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai metropolitan region continues to receive good rainfall.
