A local court on Monday granted bail to two Maharashtra MLAs who had been arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer inside the state legislature complex.

Metropolitan magistrate UM Padwad, while granting bail to MLAs Ram Kadam and Kshitij Thakur, observed that their further custody was not required.

Both the MLAs had on Friday moved the bail application after the Crime Branch of Mumbai Police sought their judicial custody, saying that further investigation could not be carried out as traffic police sub-inspector Sachin Suryavanshi, whom they had allegedly assaulted, was not in a position to identify the accused.

The court today released them on bail on a surety of Rs. 15,000 each and also directed them to appear before the Crime Branch office in Mumbai every Wednesday between 11am to 1pm, till the completion of investigation in the case.

The two MLAs, arrested on Thursday last, were remanded in judicial custody on Friday till April 5 by the local court, which had reserved the order on their bail plea for today.

On March 19, an FIR was registered at Marine Drive police station against Thakur (Independent), Kadam (MNS) and 14 others for allegedly beating up the 31-year-old police sub inspector, attached to Worli Traffic Police, inside Vidhan Bhavan premises. Later, the Crime Branch took over the probe.
