The Extradition Treaty is among the deals the two countries struck after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had a meeting with his Malaysian counterpart Mohammed Najib Tun Abdul Razak, who is currently on a five-day-tour to India.
Singh and Razak discussed on a wide range of bilateral, regional and global issues. They explored ways of expanding cooperation in counter terrorism measures, enhancing collaboration in knowledge industries and boosting trade ties.
External Affairs Minister S M Krishna and his Malaysian counterpart Anifah bin Haji Aman signed the Extradition Treaty after the talks. A Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation in Higher Education and another agreement between SEBI and Securities Commission of Malaysia were also signed. India and Malaysia had since long been negotiating the Extradition Treaty, which would enable both the countries transfer the persons wanted by each other.
Razak and Singh also agreed to fast-track negotiations on the CEPA.
