Allegedly furious with his daughter's decision to marry a youth of a different caste, a man killed her in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur-Kheri district, about 150 km from here.
The man, identified as Dataram Yadav, a resident of Daultapur village in the district, walked to the local police station after killing his daughter, police sources here said on Thursday.
Sources said that Dataram's 21-year-old daughter had been having an affair with a youth of her own village. The girl's family members did not approve of their relationship as the youth hailed from Dalit community.
According to the police, the lovers had, a few days back, filed an application with the authorities for court marriage.
A panchayat had also been convened in the village to discuss the matter and find some solution but the girl remained adamant on living with her lover.
An allegedly enraged Dataram hacked his daughter to death on Wednesday night, police said, adding that he surrendered to the cops the next morning. His wife had lodged an FIR naming him as the killer.
For 'family honour'
An unrepentant Dataram said that he killed his daughter for the sake of family honour. ''Her marriage with a Dalit would have ruined our reputation in the society,'' he told the cops.
Apparently unable to withstand the death of his lover, the youth consumed some poisonous substance to commit suicide. He was rushed to the hospital, where his condition was stated to be critical.
