The 25-year-old Deepak Chimngakham, hailing from Imphal East district of Manipur, was posted in the 7th battalion of BSF stationed at Kharkhola border outpost in Jammu and Kashmir.

"Constable Chimngakham was a dedicated soldier who served the nation with distinction and courage. His sacrifice has left the entire state and the country in mourning," Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla said in a tribute, on Monday.

Deepak, who joined BSF in April 2021, left behind his parents and a brother.

Manipur has remained under President's Rule since February due to the conflict involving the Meitei and the Kuki communities. The constable belonged to the Meitei community.

A wreath-laying ceremony will be held in Bir Tikendrajit International Airport Imphal on Tuesday, where state dignitaries, including the Governor, will pay tribute to the fallen hero.

The state government has also announced an ex gratia of Rs. 10 lakh to the martyr’s next of kin under the Major Laishram Jyotin Singh Ashok Chakra Scheme for martyrs and their families, said the statement issued by Raj Bahwan, Manipur.

"We salute the armed forces for their relentless dedication and bravery. We stand with the family of constable Deepak in this difficult time and will extend all possible support. His sacrifice will always be remembered with honour and price," N. Biren Singh, who resigned as Manipur CM in February, said in a post on X.
