Guwahati: A day after withdrawal of support by JD(U) Manipur unit to BJP government in the conflict-hit state stirred a political drama, the party's lone MLA on Thursday said he would continue to support the NDA.
"As our party led by Nitish Kumar is part of the NDA in New Delhi, Bihar and in rest of India, I will continue to support the NDA," the JD (U) MLA Muhammad Abdul Nasir said in a video message, while disassociating himself from the sacked president of the party's Manipur unit.
Sources said Nasir issued the statement after meeting the party's national working president, Sanjoy Jha, in New Delhi.
The JD (U) on Wednesday sacked it's state unit president Kshetrimayum Biren Singh, after he wrote to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla stating that its lone MLA, Md Abdul Nasir, does not support the BJP-led government and will sit in the Opposition bench in the Assembly.
Swiftly reacting to the development, JD(U) national spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan Prasad issued a video message clarifying that it continues to support the Biren Singh government, dismissing claims of withdrawing support as "baseless".
JD(U) had won in six Assembly constituencies in 2022 polls but five of them defected to BJP after the saffron party won a majority on its own with 32 seats (in the 60-member Assembly) and retained power for the second straight term.
