Imphal: A 48-year-old member of the proscribed outfit Hmar People's Convention (Democratic) was arrested in Manipur's Jiribam district and explosive materials were recovered from his possession, police said on Saturday.

A joint team of the state police and the Assam Rifles apprehended him from a place near Tuisolen village on the bank of the Barak river on Thursday, a senior officer said.

"Twenty explosive sticks, 11 detonators, one metre of safety fuse and 44 soap boxes, containing suspected brown sugar weighing 457 grams, were recovered from his possession," the official said.

The arrested member of the banned outfit hails from Lungthuilien village in Pherzawl district.

An investigation is under way to ascertain why the militant travelled from Kuki-Zo-majority Pherzawl district to Jiribam with explosives and drugs, another official said.

More than 250 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence in Manipur since May last year.
