Dhananjay Munde has claimed that a severe-drought like condition in Marathwada is triggering large-scale migration to cities.
The leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council said, "There is large scale migration of villagers and farmers to cities like Mumbai, Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad."
Post-Diwali this trend is going to increase, the NCP leader said and added that, "As of now, I do not have figures but we are compiling district wise details."
The NCP would be raising the issue in the ensuing winter session of the Maharashtra legislature.
It may be recalled that during the 2015 drought, several people undertook temporary migration in search of livelihood.
Marathwada, which comprises the eight districts of Aurangabad, Beed, Hingoli, Jalna, Latur, Nanded, Osmanabad and Parbhani, has received less than average rainfall and is facing a drought-like condition.
Dhananjay, who is the nephew of the late BJP leader Gopinath Munde and hails from Beed, said that the government has failed to act on the emerging situation.
Incidentally, his cousin and the late Gopinath's daughter Pankaja Munde is the rural development minister in the Devendra Fadnavis-led BJP-Shiv Sena alliance government in the state.
