The drugs were seized from a vehicle Tuesday on the Aizawl-Champhai Road on the outskirts of Aizawl. Based on intelligence inputs, the DRI sleuths intercepted a vehicle in which they found 16 brick-sized packets containing pink/orange colour tablets hidden in specially fabricated chambers beneath the rear seat and in the fuel tank.

"On testing, the recovered tablets were found to be methamphetamine, a contraband drug. The contraband drug weighing 16 kg, having value of Rs. 16 crores in the international illicit drug market, has been seized along with the vehicle and the driver and his accomplice has been arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985," the DRI said in a statement on Friday.

The DRI said initial investigation indicated that the contraband drug was smuggled from Myanmar. During the subsequent procedures when the DRI officers were in the process of producing the arrested persons before the court in the morning of June 4, one of the arrested persons assaulted the officers and escaped from custody. He was, however, nabbed later.

On May 30, the DRI similarly seized 9.72 kg of methamphetamine tablets and arrested one person in Seling area in Mizoram, said the statement.
