Angry protesters, on Tuesday, left parts of Kaliaganj police station in West Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur district on fire.

The incident was preceded by a fight with police on the streets in the region concerned. The trigger for the protest is the death of a minor girl whose body was recovered last week in a canal.

The protest against the alleged lack of action by police – information from the region suggests – had people from the Rajbangshi and Kamtapuri communities.

The angry mob overcame the police shield and made it to the police station, in the process attacking the personnel, who resorted to lathi-charge and tear gas shells, to check the mob. Vehicles parked close to the station were also attacked. Several police personnel sustained injuries.

The body of the 17-year old girl was discovered on April 21. It’s being alleged that the girl was raped and murdered. A video also went viral, where police personnel were seen dragging the body of the victim.

In political circles, there’s finger-pointing towards each other by the two major political parties. The autopsy report holds poisoning as the cause of death.
