Moderate earthquake shakes northeast

Officials at the Met department here told PTI, "A moderate intensity earthquake shook the region at around 8:45 IST and its epicentre was located at the Indo-Myanmar border."

A US geological website located the epicentre at about 130 km east of Manipur deep within Myanmar.

Considered to be seismologically active, Northeastern states are considered as one of the most seismically hazardous zones in the south Asia.

In 1987, an earthquake measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale claimed as many 1,600 people in the region.
