Monsoon session of Parliament begins on August 5

The government on Monday decided to convene the Monsoon Session of Parliament from August 5-30.  The session could witness deliberation on the food security ordinance and slew of legislations to perk up the sagging economy, including the Land Acquisition Bill.

The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs, at a meeting chaired by Defence Minister A K Antony, decided to recommend to President Pranab Mukherjee to convene the Monsoon Session from August 5-30. The session may have 18 sittings during which the Opposition would seek to corner the government on a number of issues ranging from corruption cases to the state of the economy.

The top priority for the government would be to seek approval of Parliament for the food security ordinance which seeks to provide cheap food grains to over 82-crore beneficiaries. The Monsoon Sessio usually begins in the third week of July and continues till late August.

Earlier, the government was planning on advancing the session to pass the National Food Security Bill, but decided against it as it found the ordinance route more favourable.

During the session, the government plans to bring forward a number of important legislations including the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill, The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority Bill, 2011, Companies Bill and the Direct Taxes Code Bill.

The Congress has been accusing the Opposition of blocking the Food Security Bill during the last session which saw repeated disruptions over a variety of issues, including the demand for resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the wake of the coal block allocation scam.
