Firebrand BJP leader and Lok Sabha member Mahant Adityanath triggered yet another controversy on Monday by declaring that he would instal idols of Hindu gods in mosques, if given the opportunity.

Coming just days after US President Barack Obama's expression of concern over “increasing religious intolerance” in India, the remark was condemned by Hindu saints as well as Muslim clerics.

Speaking at a meeting of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Lok Sabha constituency of Varanasi on Sunday evening, Adityanath, referring to the Gyanvapi Mosque in the temple town, adjoining the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple, said it “taunts” Hindus every time they go to the temple for worship.
