A social media post on Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ideologue M S Golwalkar has led Indore Police to file an FIR against Congress leader Digvijaya Singh. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, meanwhile, has accused Singh of spreading misinformation and creating social hatred.

In a tweet he posted on Saturday, Digvijaya Singh sent out a picture of the page of a book, which quoted Golwalkar as saying that he would prefer British rule over equal rights with Dalits, backwards and Muslims.

Soon after, an RSS worker Rajesh Joshi filed a FIR under Sections 153-A (promoting enmity), 469 (forgery), 500 (defamation) and 505 (statements of public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code. Joshi alleged that by sharing the post, Singh was hurting the religious beliefs of Sangh workers and the Hindu community. He also alleged that through the post Singh was trying to incite people by creating conflict among Dalits, backward classes, Muslims and Hindus.

In a tweet, Chouhan said that it is a “habit” of Congress leaders to spread misinformation and hatred. “Revered Shri Golwalkar Guruji worked throughout his life to remove social differences and build a harmonious society. This kind of false propaganda about Guruji (as Golwalkar is known among Sangh workers) shows the frustration of Congress leaders,” the tweet read.

MP Congress media department chairman K K Mishra told PTI that the police acts only on the complaints of BJP and RSS workers. “The BJP can’t silence the voice of Congress. I had given a complaint to the police about a video on beef shared by a state BJP spokesman, but four months have passed and the police have not taken any action despite submission of all proofs,” Mishra said.
