But on Friday, Nagaland government unveiled a unique "unity shawl" that seeks to juxtapose the ethnic identity of all the tribes and thereby project it as a collective identity and unity of all Naga tribes.

The "unity shawl" was unveiled by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in the state capital Kohima during inauguration of a seven-storey emporium. The emporium will act as a hub for Naga handloom, handicrafts, cuisine and culture.

"The unity shawls are a step towards building a shared visual symbol of unity among the diverse tribal communities of the state. While every tribe in Nagaland has its distinct traditional shawl, the idea of a common shawl representing Naga unity had long been envisioned," Rio said while unveilng the unique shawls.

The unity shawl was conceptualized and woven at the weaving production centre of the Nagaland Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd.(NHHDC) at the commercial town Dimapur. Such shawls are offered as a mark of respect and love.

The unity shawls have been wooven both for men nd women. The men’s shawl has been designed in three panels, the top and bottom panels feature the commonly used Naga colors—black, red, and white. The center panel is white, bordered with black and adorned with painted or embroidered motifs that symbolize elements common to all Naga tribes.

The women's shawls have been designed as in a single-panel divided into three sections. The top and bottom feature multicoloured stripes reflecting the color palette seen across Naga women’s attire. The central white section includes motifs inspired by traditional ornaments and crafts, signifying the artistry and strength of Naga women.

Naga unity:

There are 17 tribes among the Nagas but the lack of unity among them has been a concern, particularly while taking a collective decision about the state's culture and future. The step is also being seen as part of the state government's efforts to unite the Naga tribes as one entity for reaching a "comprehensive" solution to the decades-long Naga political conflict.

“Our state’s diversity—embodied in over 17 major tribes—gives rise to a rich tapestry of customs, attire, and traditional artistry. Every motif and weave tells a story. We must preserve and promote these with authenticity and pride.” Rio said.
