The process of claims and objections to the draft National Register of Citizens in Assam will start from August 30 and continue till September 30.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said the process could also be extended by another month if required.

The decision to start the process after a month was taken to ensure that people who do not find their names in the list can gather documents in the next one month and prepare to approach authorities.

No coercive action will be taken against anyone till a tribunal takes a call, officials said.

The officials assured that no person who does not find his name in the NRC will be considered a foreigner. Such such powers are vested only with tribunals where one can approach for remedies.
