New Delhi: After several controversies with its textbooks, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has now formed a committee with the head of the curriculum department as the Convenor, to look into feedback.

The development comes as the curriculum body is increasingly facing criticism for its textbook content which has been accused of historical and factual inaccuracies.

“It is a well-established practice at NCERT that whenever substantial feedback or suggestions are received regarding the content or pedagogy of a textbook in a particular subject, a committee is constituted.

"The committee carefully deliberates on the matter, makes evidence-based decisions regarding the content or pedagogy, and recommends appropriate actions accordingly at the earliest,” the NCERT said in a statement.

The social sciences textbooks for class 8, released recently, have come under heavy criticism for its content. In its textbooks, the NCERT has described Jaisalmer as part of the Maratha empire, drawing the ire of the royal family.

The depiction of Ahom kingdom from Assam has also faced severe criticism. The textbooks have also excluded the Paika Rebellion of 1817 which has prompted former chief minister Naveen Patnaik to register his protest.

The NCERT said that the committee will have as members high-level domain experts from reputed institutions and faculty members from the relevant subject area.

The curriculum body also said that it has received feedback about the educational content in a few textbooks. And so, the committee will examine the feedback in light of the available evidence and submit its report at the earliest possible.
