An anti-Gujarati community tweet by Congress MLA Nitesh Rane, son of former Maharashtra chief minister Narayan Rane, has created a flutter in political circles and is snowballing into a major controversy.

The state unit of the Congress was, however, quick to distance itself from the comments of Rane Jr.

In a tweet, Nitesh said: “Want to take part in Swaccha Bharat Abhiyan and start from Mumbai. Want to start cleaning up all the Marathi hating Gujaratis from there once for all”.
A few hours later, he came out with another tweet – “So much hoopla over my statement on the Marathi hating Gujaratis but no one is focussing on the hate statements passed by them almost everyday.”

He later clarified that he was not against Gujaratis who want harmony, but only against those who want to take control of the city.
