With major rivers in spate, the flood situation in north Bihar remained grim on Sunday.

The north-east districts in the State, particularly Araria and Kishanganj, around 450 kms from the State Capital, were the worst hit with flood water submerging the National Highway 31, as well as the railway tracks.

As a consequence, several hundreds of trucks were stranded on NH-31 which connects Guwahati with Delhi.

At least 17 trains, which crosses through Kishanganj, too have been suspended till water recedes.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who held a high-level meeting with the ministers and officials of Water Resources Department and Disaster Management Department, apprised Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the grim flood situation.

It is believed that the PM assured Nitish of all possible assistance including additional deployment of NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) personnel.

Meanwhile, five teams of SDRF and three from NDRF started relief and rescue operation in Forbesganj, Araria and Kishanganj districts.

“Most of the villages in Kishanganj have been hit by flood waters. People are being moved to safer places and other relief camps set up by the district administration,” said district magistrate Pankaj Dixit.

Two persons were reportedly swept away in the area following flood waters of Mahanadi over-topping the NH-31.

Flood situation in North Bihar particularly, Bagaha, Sitamarhi, Saharsa and Supaul too remained grim following heavy rainfall in Nepal.

These districts in Bihar share border with the Himalayan Kingdom.
