The National Institutes of Technology (NIT) has begun a special counselling session to fill up all vacant seats by converting those under the home state quota into all-India quota.

The HRD Ministry has approved the conversion of seats, as more than 3000 of them remained vacant after six rounds of counselling held by the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) of the elite colleges.

“IF home state quota seats are left vacant even after allotment to home state candidates, they will be filled by candidates from other states having the same category on the basis of JEE (Main) rank,” the CSAB has notified.

The ministry has given special relaxation for Northeast students to apply for NITs in the region.

The CSAB has reduced the minimum qualification marks for students from the region (for admissions to NIT) from 75% to 45% for general  category and 40% for reserved category (SC/ST/PWD).

This would enable North-east students who cleared JEE (Main) and secured 45% in their Class XII to apply for NITs in their own region in the special round of counselling. They will be enrolled in seats under  the home state quota.
